Questions from Lighting Readings

1. What types of lighting were discussed ? How can these fixtures benefit city hall?
Daylighting, pendant, uplighting, flourescent, incandescent, and LED. Uplighting will help reduce glare in the workspace. Pendant fixtures can help create rhythm in a space and can also help with way-finding. Daylighting will help even out the lighting within the space and also increase productivity, as well as make the space feel light and airy.
2. What seemed to be the the biggest dissatisfaction with office types? How will this affect my design?
Acoustics, distraction from noises in the office and no privacy are some of the set backs of an open office plan. Employees must also adjust to smaller work stations. Open floor plans however allow for more daylight, sense of community, and less materials used since there are less partition walls.
3. Is the courthouse appropriate for a dominant day lighting system?
I think it is. there are large windows that could bring in light into almost every space. I am going to try and utilize daylight to cut down on energy use and make the building more sustainable.
4. What are the benefits of daylighting?
One benefit is that is uses no energy and is sustainable. Some cool flourescents can make people look tired or sickly, but sunlight makes people look natural. It also helps regulate people circadian rhythm and helps people produce vitamin d, which can help with productivity.
5. Do codes matter for lighting design?
Yes, because all pathways must be well lit for egress.
6. Is lighting objective or subjective?
I think it's a little of both. You need a certain amount of light in order to work. So the baseline of lighting is objective. I think lighting is mostly subjective though. Different people prefer different amounts of lighting and different types. It also depends on what kind of work they are doing in the space.
7. How does the information of these articles apply to the programming and design?
It helps me decide what type of office plan to use for the amount of space I have. It also helps me in deciding on what type of lighting will work best for the office environment and also for the performance/gallery space.

Exaggeration [2 Bedroom]

Inspired by the client’s love of drama and film, this 2 bedroom condo is a sweeping set dedicated to the exploration of exaggeration. Within each room there is a play of vibrant color and surreal scale. The large objects give the eye a focal point, while at the same time provide a sense of joy and drama in each room. Teal, orange, and blue are trendy colors in movies and relate the past to the present through color. The colors also add pops to emphasize walls an fixtures. Polished concrete reflects light and color, adding to the exaggeration of a room, without being overwhelming. Bachelard talks about intimacy within imensity and our obsession with miniatures. I tried to incorporate size into each room to make them feel unique, yet cohesive to the entire condo. Through joyful colors and playful scaling of objects I hoped to create a space that intrigues a lover of exaggeration.

Binding Family[3 bedroom]

Inspired by a bookpress and patterns found in book binding. I focused on spaces that would allow a family to bond through interaction and activity. The main open space encompasses all of life’s daily tasks. A family would always be in the same vicinity, yet do to the vast, open area they would still retain their independent space. A library was added as an outlet to the client’s passion of writing and literature. Quiet, minimal spaces flank off of the library to allow a comfortable lounge area for reading and editing. Private spaces are kept with the same minimal aesthetic, yet bring in motifs an patterns of the public spaces. The wallpaper was custom made for the space and helps tie the main open space together, while at the same time defining certain areas. The wallpaper design was inspired by bookbinding and the folding and linking pages together. Repetition of circles is carried throughout the condo. Bachelard states that humans have an innate affection for round things. The circular aspects help make rooms intriguing, while at the same time remind the occupants of the importance of being embraced, which will help reinforce family ties. Nordic ash wood floors were used on the floors and walls. By carrying materials up planes if further binds the space together.

15 Properties: Exaggeration

1. Levels of scale: Scale was used as a huge part of my concept. I used scale as a playful tool for invoking drama into each room. Large, medium, and small scale were used in each space to contrast each other and add to the feeling of exaggeration. Scale is the most dominant element in each room.
2. Strong Centers: Centers are created by using pops of color to guide your eye and make the room feel balanced. Larger scale also helps direct your eye and makes the spaces feel centered.
3. Boundaries; Boundaries were created between public and private spaces. Rooms have walls that create boundaries and make the room feel more intimate.
4. Alternating Repetition: Repetition was mainly used by pieces of furniture and similarly scaled objects. Round objects are repeated throughout the spaces. Colors are also used to create repetition.
5. Positive Space: Positive and negative space can be observed through the placement of carpets on glossy concrete. This defines flow and path while creating positive and negative space.
6. Good Shape: Objects with a larger scale call more attention to themselves and their shape. Objects shapes are increased and celebrated with a larger scale. These Shapes also call attention to the centers.
7. Local Symmetries: The relationship between kitchen, dining, and living room is the most successful. They compliment each other through color and have an easy flow in between the spaces.
8. Deep Interlock and Ambiguity: Each space is tied to each other through materials, color, and scale. This helps the entire space function as a whole.
9. Contrast: There is contrast between the strong colors used for pops and their surrounding environment. Small and large scale contrast each other and other surroundings, which adds drama and play into the spaces.
10. Roughness: Each space functions in its own, while adding to the experience of traveling through them. Shapes change from different angles and add drama to the room.
11. Gradients; white surfaces and objects were used as a way to create a gradient of grey through shadows and lighting.
12. Echoes: Scale echoes in all space. A playful atmosphere also unites spaces into a whole. Round objects are also a motif used in each room.
13. The Void: Vast areas are left blank on the walls. This serves as a resting point for your eye and helps put into context the scale of objects in the room. Open spaces of concrete make the space seem crisp and calm.
14. Simplicity and Inner Calm: Even though the use of scale was meant to create drama within the space, it also helps evoke a calmness by knowing the definite center of a room. The large objects call your attention and allow for little other distractions.
15. Non-Separateness: By using the same techniques in every room, and unifying the spaces with color and material, each space adds to the whole. It is a balancing act between the spaces to make them feel cohesive.

Inspired by the clients love of theater and vintage movie posters, I came up with the concept of exaggeration. I enlarged objects, mostly light fixtures for more drama, and juxtaposed them with small, thin pieces of furniture. This helped bring focus to the play of scale in each room. Color held an important role in directing the eye and adding a sense of fun to the rooms.

1: Levels of scale: I made the wallpapers varying scale to define a space and the center of the main room. The larger print moves your eye towards a center.
2. Strong centers: Each room focuses your eye to a central object or space. Symmetry was used to help define these centers. A strong sense of balance helps focus your view on a center in each space as well. The entire condo also has a central main room that runs the entire length and helps the family bond.
3. Boundaries: A thick boundary is created around the central main room by the two halls that flank it. This helps define it as the center.
4. Alternating Repetition: The wallpaper has an repetitive pattern on it, which helps tie the main room together. The slanted bookcases also have a repetitive pattern, which helps tie the office to the library. There is also a circular motif carried through each room.
5. Positive Space: Strong negative an positive space is created by the bookshelves in the library. The spaces in between the books becomes as important as the shelving and the books.
6. Good Shape: A circular motif is carried throughout each space. This roundness contrasts with the linear space and creates interest in each room.
7. Local Symmetries: The objects in the kitchen and living remain close to the ground. The chandelier in the dining room and the pattern of light created on the ceiling raise your eye up and break up the central core into two balanced sides with a raised center.
8. Deep Interlock and Ambiguity: All the rooms within the condo are tied together through materials and color. The wood floor is carried throughout the entire house and carried up to some of the walls. The color palette is consistent in every space as well as certain round shapes. This makes all of the spaces cohesive.
9. Contrast: Red is contrasted against grey, white, and a light neutral. Round shapes are also contrasted against against rectilinear shapes.
10. Roughness: The center in the library is created from the shapes in the bookcase and the catwalk above. The ball chairs create a contrast against the surrounding and help define the center
11. Gradients: Gradients of red and grey are carried throughout the condo.
12. Echoes: Circles are echoed on each room. They are used at different scales and places so as not to seem monotonous. The echoes help tie all of the room together as well.
13. The Void: Walls are left mostly empty with vast expanses of nothing. This gives your eye a place to rest and makes the space seem calm. There are also large empty spaces in between each room. This helps define space without the use of walls an allows for the creation of an open central space.
14. Simplicity of Inner Calm: The best example of this is the reading space adjacent to the office. This is a calm place meant for daydreaming and reading. I wanted to rid the space of all distractions while still keeping it comfortable. The light grey wallpaper and wooden wall make a happy marriage in that calm corner.
15. Non-Separateness: Through a distinct color palette, repetition of pattern and shapes, and use of materials each space within the condo is unique, with its own center, yet at the same time each space contributes to the whole.

Inspired by a book press, the artifact assigned to my clients, I looked at patterns of book binding. This led me to my concept of binding family. My spaces fold and overlap into each other through pattern, colors and furnishings.

We visited a beautiful ranch house last week. I loved it from the exterior to the interior. There was a central hearth area that the public spaces surrounded. I loved how the fireplace was on the corner. Light poured into this house because of the huge windows. My favorite feature however were the small ponds on ech side of the house.

I really enjoyed visiting the Bungalow house on Mendenhall. I was surprised to see so many similarities to the bungalow I live in. The two houses were built 5 years apart. The layout of the house is very similar, along with window placement, and moldings. The exact same fireplace is in both houses. It was great to see another house from that era. I thought the dining room was a beautiful space. My favorite feature in the dining room are the french doors.

I visited four houses on the tour. Taste ranged from contemporary to modern. I liked the color palettes used in the houses and most of the light fixtures. The light fixtures were light and minimalist. Most of the houses had large rooms and windows. Most fixtures were on the light side, except for some dark wood.

This si my first experience dealing with codes. I understand the necessity of codes but I feel like it puts designers right back in the box they are trying to escape. Sitting there reading all the codes it was such an overload. I hated looking over all these regulations and restrictions. I am glad though that codes make design accesible to all. It opened my eyes to how difficult it would be to navigate through a building in a wheelchair. I do believe that design should be open to everyone so I'm glad I had this expirience.

This is the beginning of my process. i started thinking of very simple shelters that people could easily take with them. One was a fold-up shelter that built off of other shelters. The other idea(the one I ended up going with) was a livable wheel. I called it the cheese wheel.
These are some preliminary sketches of the form and the interior.
This was my first crisis moment of the semester. I tried to build a wire frame and put clay over it. My wire frame collapsed and the clay was basically unworkable. So I had to use another material and edit the shape.

Our group decided to design for the refugees of Darfur. They live in camps in awful conditions and are always moving. I wanted to design a house that provided all the necessities and was easily portable. My shelter functions as a round hut that can be lived in and then you flip it on its side and you roll it along with you like a big wheel. I wanted it to be very durable yet lightweight. I used paper because it represents how light I would like it to be. The interior would all be fastened to the wall so nothing would come out of place when you rolled it. I was inspired by the interior of japanese houses, Actually using the dirt as a floor and then having a raised platform to live and sleep on. My platform curves to fit the shape and is a foot and a half off the ground. In the middle on the floor is a small stove with a small pipe that comes out of the roof. This would function as a place to cook and a source of warmth at night. The fireplace pipe also functions as a place to hook the cable when you want to rol it and take it with you.

Here are some makeshift homes. They have nothing to work with except the elements around them. These houses must be rebuilt every time they move to a different refugee camp.
This is a refugee camp in Chad, a bordering country. The genocide that is taking place in Darfur displaces thousands of people. They live in makeshift shelters like these.
It gets very hot during the day so any shelter is helpful. People are crowded into spaces and families rarely have their own unit of space. There is no such thing as privacy.
This is an aerial view of a refugee camp.
These may look like piles of garbage to us, but these are homes. They are very unstable and not tall enough to fit a grown adult in.

Gesture + Symbol: This bench caught my eye because it has a slight curve to it. When I was thinking about Cultural and social meanings I was thinking how the bench was fit to acomodate slouching. I think this is a cultural thing because we all like to lean back and relax, and the bench was built to fit.
Symmetry + Balance: This shelter can be cut into symmetrical halves from the front and the side. It is divided into 2 by the support on the side. From the back the supports divide the shelter into six equal pieces, which can be divided in half. Where I think this shelter missed the bar is the roof throws the shelter off balance. It looks just stuck on the top without any thought.
Repetitive + Unique: There were repetitive support bars all over the shelter. It drew your eye across the form. There wasn't a unique piece in this bus stop.
Mass + Form: This bus stop was a rectangular form. It had three walls and a curved roof. there were glass panels and the roof was opaque. It had two benches inside to sit on.

Going into this assignment I had no idea what to expect. I lived on a road that buses drove down every thirty minutes last year and had a bus stop across the street from my house. The only people I had seen get on the bus were somewhat sketchy, so I made sure to go with a group. As I waited for the bus I started to think of how little I knew about it. I had only seen nameless faces ride by on it. I stood there taking pictures and waited and waited. As soon as it rolled up I was true to form and became a clumsy mess. I was trying to get my camera to take a picture and my student ID at the same time. I climbed on the bus, swiped my card, and assumed my position between Josie and Krista. I briefly noticed the vague shock of the people already on the bus as we settled in. I immediately started taking tons of pictures. Out the window , the seats, the emergency exit, and Ron Hatfield, our bus driver. I felt that the air wasn't so crisp. It was just cool enough so you would only develop a slight sweat. It smelled like chemicals, city and diesel. The chairs were a hideous print and color and were not very comfortable. I felt like an idiot pointing out all the brand new bus things to people. After about 10 minutes of pictures nausea started to set in and I was forced to just sit and endure the ride(the bus apparently has better brakes then my car, and they like to use them often and very sharply). As I sat there I finally noticed the people on the bus. They weren't the sketchballs I had seen before, in fact most of them just wanted to go to the mall. Most of them sat quietly or listened to music. I felt as if I had been tricked into some IARC social experiment. We stayed on the bus for an entire loop and I was thrilled to be on solid ground.
I decided to save the reading for after the trip so I could go in with a fresh outlook. I wanted to focus on everything and I thought the reading might confine me. Now that I have done the reading I think this was an attempt to get us outside our comfort zone and experience something new. It was a different world in a way, but at the same time I felt relaxed and comfortable the entire time. I think it was kind of fun to be the oddballs in a group, to be the unexpected and to meet or fail expectations.

I never thought i would say that i'm glad to be back in school, but I am. My first taste of second year was pleasant. I liked collaborating in the smaller groups. I think it is an essential part of a designers job to learn how to work with other people. Working with over 50 people in a group was an impossible task, although we managed to come out in the end with something. That was something I learned was to try and commit to an idea that wasn't mine. It was cool to see what the group could come up with as a whole. I love the location of my new desk, which sits next to a fabulous, shiny window(the view outside the window is a different story). Over the summer I finally had time to get myself together and get some of my priorities straightened out. I am looking forward to being a 100% totally committed student. I look forward to this year and am excited for all the new things we'll get to create.

I went back numerous times(although ended up distracted instead of sketching). I tried to map out my space by showing small spaces and then using them to put a space together. and sorry about it being late, there was this whole work and then tornado thing yesterday.

This assignment gave me a new perspective on trash, and that is how many different things you can do with besides throw it away. We started off making a bracelet out of bottle caps and then stamped a design on them. This looked like an incomplete design so we decided to make a floor mat out of them. We sewed the bottle caps together using hemp, which is very good environmentally. The mat is actually quite comfortable to stand on. We were also going to paint the top of the caps white, but then we decided to embrace that it looked like garbage and it has a kind of pop art feel to it. This assignment turned out very well and I'm proud of the outcome.

This is my project. I really like the design I came up with but I wish i had more time to let it grow a bit more. I really wanted my statement to look organic. I think out boards worked well with each other. They have similar elements but each board is unique. I'm very pleased at how this all turned out.

This is our board for the moore building. We tried to incorporate elements of the building into our board. I think our color scheme worked out very nice. We really tried to not have any awkward spaces on our board. I think the board turned out very sucessfull.

I like that the images in this picture seem ghost -like, but still accurate at the same time. I also like the use of watercolor and that she put shadows with the figures. I think this image portrays the images well, without taking away from the architecture drawing. You can see more stuff here.
This image looks like the figures were added after the drawing. They are light, yet they demonstrate the scale. I tend to like lighter, less distracting figures. These figures also look like people which is nice. Go here for more.

What i like about these figures is that they show a lot of movement and gesture. The one in the striped shirt looks like it's laughing. I think if you can show movement in your figures it makes your drawing look more appealing. It also makes you want to be in that space because people look like they are having a good time. Link.

I like all of these drawings because they are all crisp and clean. They look perfect, as if they could trace the building. I also like the use of color. I think it adds a spark to the drawings. I especially like the one done with watercolor. You can find all these artists here.

These are my details. The first one is the sink at my house. It's very old, and broken(hot is cold and cold is hot). If it looks crooked, good, it is. I liked the pipes because they looked very weird all coming out of my sink, and I liked the way the big one twists back.
The second one is a doorknob. This is a detail I pay attention to anyway, so it was fun to draw, especially since it looked like an antique doorknob. I love drawing metallic things, but this one was weird because it was so old, it really didn't have much of a shine anymore.
My third one is one of the lights hanging all over the place. I used grey markers to shade on this one, mostly just messing around and trying new things, but i think it came out somewhat decent.

This is the west, south, and east side lined up om the bottom. I tried to fit all of them on the scanner, but a little bit was cut off. I used guidelines to help me.
This is the top view lining up with the south. This was the most difficult one to do.
I didn't have room for the north side on the bottom so i lined it up at the top. Everything pretty much lined up perfectly, so this was the least difficult.

Next time i'm going to take a photograph of the entire thing and post it on my blog. I had to separate the orthographic up you can't really get a sense of the whole drawing.

Ok? for some reason it will only let me write with blue link letters(i think blogger.com hates me). So I took a bit longer doing one drawing then the other two. I did a contour of my purse with some shading. Then i used hatching for the drawer with kitchen towels. I shaded the silverware. The silver was really fun to draw and I think reflections are something you can have a lot of fun with.

This is the cross-hatching sketch. I first mapped out everything very roughly on the paper and then went back in and drew the actual forms in pencil. Then I drew over everything with pen. I wanted the hatching to look almost like it would in a comic book, instead of realistic. I used different sizes of pen, as well as different shades of gray.

1. Antoni Gaudi
Gaudi inspired me to go into interior architecture. The first time I saw his La Sagrada Familia I was in awe. I didn't think buildings could look that.....awesome. The Sagrada is very organic looking, but also has a dark feel to it, which I love. There is just so much to look at. My favorite parts are the towering spires and the doors with letters all over them. Gaudi was born in 1852. He had rheumatic health problems as a child and couldn't move much. He spent hours observing animals, plants, and stones. When he was older he moved to Barcelona to atten the Provincial School of Architecture. He often missed class and spent hours in the library. He said that design/style doesn't depend as much on aesthetics as it does on the social and political atmosphere. Gaudi had blonde hair and blue eyes and was known for his bad temper. I think he was a genius and I could spend hours looking at his buildings.

2. Mike and Maaike
Ever since I saw an article on these designers in I.D. I have been obsessed with their jewelery. There are no jewels in their pieces. Their necklaces and earrings don't look like they could exist outside of a computer. They look pixelated and when people wear them it looks very surreal. They are made of leather and would look very trendy with almost any outfit. I really loved how they used something imperfect, like something being pixelated, ad turned it into an awesome piece to wear.

3. Victor Horta
I stumbled across this designer through my art 101 class. I saw the Hotel Tassel and immediately fell in love. I have art nouveau posters all over my house and it is one of my favorite styles. His staircase looks like something out of a dream. He used very organic shapes, based in nature when designing this hotel. Victor was born in Ghent. He moved to Paris to become an interior designer. He loved using metal, glass, and curves in his work. He settled in Brussels where he raised a family. He was inspired by art nouveau. He became very sucessful after he completed the Hotel Tassel. He did many buildings in Brussels. After art nouveau fell out of trend many of his buildings were sadly destroyed.

4. Frank Lloyd Wright
How could I not talk about Frank! Seeing his Falling Water building was the first time I ever became interested in architecture. The Guggenheim Museum is also one of my favorites. It curves around, elegantly guiding you up and down. He was born in 1867 in Wisconsin. His mother was determined that he become an architect. When he was older he moved to Chicago and was hired as a tracer. there he met Louis Sullivan, the only man Frank said to have influenced him. In 1909 he left for europe for 2 yrs, with his scandalous relationship with Mamah. In 1914 a newly hired chef locked all but one door of his house and set it on fire. As Mamah and her two children fled the building he cut them down brutally. Frank was devastated and buried himself in his work. His commissions dwindled during the great depression so he wrote several books. In 1934 he built Falling Water in Pennsylvania. His popularity sky-rocketed afterwards. He died on April 9th, 1959.

5. SOM
SOM is a design firm i've run across a lot in numerous magazines. Their buildings are bold, and seem to be the future of architecture. They are currently working on several projects in Dubai, and one happens to be the tallest building in the world. Their buildings stand out in any cityscape. They have offices located across the world and work on projects internationally.

6. Bart Prince
I ran across this designer while flipping through Architectural Digest. His interior caught my eye. It looks like a jungle, with tons of different textures and wood. There is a 75 foot pool that runs through the middle. It's covered with mosaics. The living spaces are designed around the pool. I'm a big fan of anything having to do with water so this caught my eye right away. Bart was born in 1947 in New Mexico. He attended the College of Architecture at Arizona University in 1965. In 1968 he was awarded the Architectural Foundation Travel Giant award. He has been working ever since.

7.Niki de Saint Phalle
I also stumbled across this designer through Architectural Digest. Her garden that is made of mosaics and inspired by tarot cars is a dream I want to live in. She was born in 1930 in France. She was kicked out of numerous private schools. She once painted bright red fig leaves all over school statues and the school recommends psychiatric help. In 1948 she works as a model and becomes interested in acting. In 1953 she has a nervous breakdown. Painting was therapy to her so she decided to become and artist. In 1955 she visits Gaudi's Park Guell and she says it changed her life. She works as an artist and has shows and installations all over the world. In 1982 she finally begins work on her tarot gardens. She still shows her art, and does so up until she died. I was very fond of this designer. If I could have an ideal life, hers would be it. I also identified with her because i had to be taken out of public school and put into private. I've been in 7 different schools over the past seven years, so her early years inspired me and gave me hope. I think I might become a huge fan of this woman.

8. Sumo Lounge
I think that it is a really cool idea to go back to something simple(and cheap) and redo the design a little to make it look like high design. I like the multi-functionality of heir beanbags. They can be used as a chair or a love seat. I also like how they only specialize in beanbags. It's cool that they are so specific.

9. Cedric Ragot
Cedric combines creativity with industrial reality. He graduated from the French National Institute for Advanced Study in Design. He founded his own company at the age of 29. his designs are very modern looking. The design that caught my eye was his Fast Vases. They look like they are in very powerful wind and being blown away.

10. David Menting
David works for the company JSPR. He focuses on indoor and outdoor furniture. His "landscape of relaxation" is what caught my eye. It's a bunch of green chairs that can fit together in different ways and patterns. It reminds me of looking out plane windows and seeing the ground beneath you.

Design research: 2 new technologies

OK. So these aren't the two most useful new technologies, but they are very interesting and deserve to be looked at.

1. Living Surfaces or liquid lava is an unreal new technology. These tiles can be put on table tops or laid on floors. Inside the tiles is liquid that is very resilient to pressure. When any weight is put on it the colors change around it. You can literally leave for hand print on something. The imprint will last a couple seconds and then disappear. Then when ever you're ready you can start playing with the colors again. The color spread out in an amoeba-like way. You can get a variety of colors from bright reds and oranges, to a wide range of pastels.

2. DNA, fingerprint, and lipstick portraits are an exciting new way to express your individuality. I think it's a cool new way for science and design to come together. I think it is a very literal and bold way to express who you are. The DNA portrait is composed of your genetic makeup and is an exact map of who you are. No two fingerprints are alike(except for identical twins) so I would think it would be something you would want to flaunt. It's a very strong expression of who you are. The last piece is made from you kissing a sensor and then your kiss mark is blown up into a picture. This seems a very pop-art way of self-expression. It would make a perfect decoration in any bedroom. And of course they supply tou with the perfect lipstick, so your kiss will show up perfectly.

I didn't know what i was clicking on until i clicked on it. The products are very beautiful. Light fixtures are one of my favorite things to look for so i really enjoyed this website.

Off to the left side is a bar with information and text on it. The only problem is everything is cut off so you have n idea what is being said. You also can;t click on it. It isn't very easy to find something quickly, although they might've wanted to make you explore the site.

I love anything having to do with water, be it bath tubs, sinks, or water sculptures. I was very excited to go to this website and spent about an hour looking at all of their projects. I like how they explain all their products at the bottom of the pictures. I also like how they give the price. I think this little detail is very interesting, so i scroll down to check out how many bills people drop on these sculptures. The only confusing part was when you clicked on the picture of their products on their homepage. It takes you somewhere that i still don't know why everything is there.

It's a bunch of dog's heads on human bodies dressed in different trends. I especially like the greyhound with tattoos and the chihuahua in a pink dress sitting on the bench. I found the dog furniture pretty easily and was surprised by all the choices. There must be some spoiled dogs out there. The layout was very playful and put you in a good mood as you browsed around.

This website drew me in with the bubble chair, so I had to go see what else they had. This website has a lot of colors, which is nice to look at. It was very easy to navigate. They put pictures of the products next to the text, so as to draw you in. A little farther down they show what will be in each category. They have some pretty awesome designs and products. The logo at the bottom looked very modern and unique. This site is definitely getting bookmarked.

I love the designs of this website. I like that all his designs are made of two-dimensional things that are put together to form a three-dimensional piece. The color of the background works really well with all of his pictures. The pictures really pop out at you and make te products more enticing(maybe too enticing, I really want to buy the Palm Mobile.) The subtle white alligator scale shapes in the background are a nice detail. It was easy to navigate and I like how there wasn't a ton of products under each gallery. It was easy to pay attention to individual pieces this way.

1. This building is the signature towers in dubai. They were designed by Zaha Hadid and are 75,65, and 55 stories high. I like how they are bent out and look like they are defying gravity. they are a very shiny metal that make it look like mirrors.

2. This is the 0-14 building. It's 23 stories tall. I think the circles make it look very organic. It reminds be of a bee-comb. It looks much taller then it is. It won't be completed until 2009 and i'm very excited to see it completed.

3. Can we say awesome!!! This is the dynamic architecture tower designed by David Fisher. It will be 68 stories tall and completed in 2010. I love the spin at the bottom. It makes it look interesting, yet at the same time gives the building a sense of movement. It's in a dark brown, reflective color which makes it stand out. It all gives it a natural look, like a giant red wood tree.

4. This is Burj Dubai designed by SOM, and it's a monster. This is the tallest building in the world at a towering 160+ stories. I like how portions of the tower break off and stop short. It starts with a huge base and ends in a small needle point. It gives it a mountain like look with it's jagged plateaus along it's structure.

5. This Al Sharq and is 100 stories tall. It looks very industrial and fragile. There are 9 huge tubes seamlessly put together. It looks as if it should be very small because it's made of just tiny tubes connected. The tubes are broken up in layers, which makes it's distance look very long. there is shiny metal at the very top, which would make it stand out.

6. This is the Burj Al Alam. It starts with a wide base and curves in to form a slender" waist." this makes it slightly resemble a stretched out human torso. It ends with jagged, petal like shapes at the very top. this adds and unexpected twist to the building, like a surprise at the very end. This building will be 108 stories and completed in 2010.

7. This building is amazing! It is the Dubai Towers and will be completed in 2010. The first time I saw these I couldn't believe this was going to be a real building. These curving structure defy everything I can imagine about design. I think this is the most unique building i've ever seen. I would travel all the way to dubai just to see this building. It has a goldish color to it that give a sense of fire to it.

8. This is the Time Residence and s 30 stories tall. this is a very elegant building, and added to that elegance is the shiny black windows that cover the entire building. It looks like a cylinder being unfolded into a flat plane. It looks very unstable at the top, but that adds to its appeal. The curve at the top is very pleasing to the eye. This building would be neat to look at no matter which angle you were at.

9. This is Bayswater and is 25 stories tall. At first this building looked kind of clunky and stable. Now when i look at it, it looks like two pillars leaning against each other. The leaning gives it a tension. It looks like what a building would look like after an earthquake.

10. This is Pentonium and is 120 stories tall. It has small triangular jut outs that are on the middle of the building. It looks like waves rippling through the buildings. The blue color of it give it a classy look. This building would look very cool at night with all the lights on inside of it.

All these buildings are the buildings of the future. They will be in Dubai. I chose these ten because they were all very unique.

A different perspective: tokyo, Japan

Tokyo has always been a dream city to me. It seems to be so big that you would get lost in it. So when I came across an article that was on the design of recent developments in Tokyo I was thrilled. Japanese have always admired the architecture of New York City. They love the timeless look of all the buildings. They actually hired an architect from manhattan to build the new development in Roppongi Hills. This used to be a feudal lord's land. Then it was used for the defense system in Japan. When the city bought this land it was one of the most expensive land transactions ever. Now Roppongi Hills is a thriving business center with offices, 5 star hotels, and shopping complexes. Around 40% of Tokyo is open to the public. Thet made sure to incorporate nature into their design. They saved 170 full grown trees from the site. There is also beautiful landscape and waterfronts in Roppongi Hills. This project was supposed to get people to move back into the city. Lately there has been a trend, since the 1970s, that people are moving out of the city and into the suburbs. This space is supposed to be an incentive to draw people back into the city.

I love this room! The carpet gives it ons of movement, like the room is constantly shifting. the bed looks very comfortable and different. I like how the mattress sits in the bed instead of on top of it. The dark picture behind the bed draws your eye up to the ceiling. The light above the bed is the highlight of the room. I love how it looks like tons of little balls floating overhead. I think the whole room is held together by the white bed frame.

This room has a very organic feel to it mixed with and old, antique feel. They have curving structures hung down from the ceiling, which makes it look like you're under water. The bright, dramatic lights are placed throughout the balcony. They look kind of dangerous, with the sharp, straight edges. My favorite part of this room is the wall of the balcony. The layered, lighted circles are a great detail. I like the curving layers og the banister. I think this room has a very art nouveau style to it.

I'm a huge fan of japanese design. I think they always use the simplicity to it's max. At first the room looks dark and confined, but as you explore it more it looks very spacious. The round skylight casts very interesting shadows all over the room. I think the best part of the room is the smooth, white sculpture set in the corner. The roundness of this object is exaggerated by the shadows from the skylight.

The top of this structure has a very skeletal feel to it. It looks like columns split off into branches which hold up the ceiling. The frame at the top casts great curved shadows on the floor. The huge, round flag structures flap in the wind. This makes the room feel refreshing, and somewhat magical. I think it's great that they used very beautiful designs in the material.

This room is very quiet. It has a very serene atmosphere. The black rods at structure to the room, while the bamboo echoes a natural structure. The lights in the rocks on the floor give a nice, calm glow to the space. I like how the put a very natural strip into this very human space.

The colorful windows make this space very playful. The colored windows would cast awesome shadows on the ground. it would be really fun to climb the staircase and gaze out the different windows through the colors.

I love the motif of circles throughout the room. It really brings the room together. The ceiling mimic each other because they're both made out of wood. The ceiling curves up which makes the room feel very open. The striped carpet draws your eyes across the room. The main focus of the room is the gorgeous, class chandelier hanging above. I love how different this light looks.

This is part of a building built in the sixties, meant for whale gazing. There is a carved out circle in the middle that the couch sits in. There is a long table that cuts the room in half. The curved ceiling gives you a safe, protected feeling. The fireplace seems like a huge comfort and adds to the relaxing atmosphere of the room.

I don't think i could walk through this hallway without getting teary-eyed because it's so beautiful. These are some of my favorite colors. I love how the fade into different colors. The jaaged edged give it a glacier-like feeling. This would be like walking through a jem.

This interior reminds of walking on water. The carpet reminds of ripples and it gives the room a sense of movement. The bright colors are balanced out by the white walls and furniture. The furniture is very irregular and seems only held together by the fact that all the pieces are white. This is a very eye-popping room and I would really like to be in this room and enjoying the enviroment.

This is a very striking add. It has a huge contrast to it with placing something so structured into a very organic enviroment. The product in the middle has rectangles that are placed perfectly apart.

This add is very clean. The girl sitting on the couch is wearing all white, along with white hair. This is a very nice detail. A big surprise in this add is that the text is brown. I would think they would go for the traditional black text.

This add uses only the product and nothing else to guide your eye. I like all the different stripe on the couch and the pillows. The use of color helps draw you eye where it needs to go. i love the simplicity of the layout.

Flipping through a magazine you almost never see a pink add. I like the tropical feel of the add and the very casual text. I also like really cool fish up in the corner. There is only one white one, which gives it a neat pattern.

This is an advertisement that really caught my eye. All the little holes and shapes are cut out of the paper. I think this gives it a very unique look and the colors are very bold. It makes me want to not only look at it, but touch it as well. It is made of very thick paper which feels cool and makes the ad easy to find. The magazine naturally opens to this page because of how think the paper is.

This ad looks very sleek and put together even though it has tons of hearts all over it. It looks organized and like it has some kind of rhythm. The hearts are arranged in a pattern, yet they still look somewhat random. I think this ad is very appealing because it only has implied lines, and the shapes guide you eyes.

This is a layout for an article. I like the organic/teardrop shapes that hold the title. I also like how the shapes are shaded and how they fit together. The pictures at the bottom draw your eye across the page.

This ad is like eye candy. It all flows together somehow. You start with a black chair and end up with a red flower. I think the transition was done very well. You can follow it and it doesn't look like 3 random pictures stuck together. I also like how the images are seperated between a thin white line. This makes the ad look very clean.

time capsule drawings

My drawings turned out very geometric. I like how structured they are and i really tried to represent the space as best i could. The space is in the front lobby, right when you walk in. Light shining through the cut out letters is a huge part of my design so my project will be mounted in the window, second from the bottom, all the way to the left. The drawings were too small to put letters in so i made my project the darkest thing on the page so it would pop out and get your attention. I'm really sorry but I can't get my images to stay rotated, so they're all sideways.

I did mt drawing in 1 1/2 scale. I tried to give a sense of how the letters looked on the fabric, but that was very hard to do. My time capsule is pretty 2-dimensional so this drawing wasn't so hard from the side and the top. I tried to arrange all my drawings so they all lined up.

Zine.......that took forever

This my progress zine. I tried to lay out my zine from start to finish. It was a long process and it was hard to say everything i wanted. I struggled a little bit with bordering scrapbook vs layout. In the end i just wanted to have fun with it. I used lots of fun patterns and tons of color.
My final design is my letter box. It came from my original design and then listening to what the group wanted. I really tried to have a community sense in my piece. I wanted everyone to feel that this was their time capsule. People will be given a certain amount of letters to explain what design means to them. I think words are one of the most powerful things we posses. I also think that having your ideas carved into something gives you a sense of permanence, that people knew you were there. In 20 yrs when people come back the time capsule will be cut up and dismantled. Everyone will be given their piece that has what they wrote 20 yrs ago on it.

I based my zine off of the layouts and only had one problem. I needed more pages then i laid out. So i put chunks of my project into the same layout.

These are my shading exercises from the book. I like hatching and cross- hatching for ink. I don't like the way stipling makes the surface look. I also don't like the way scribbling looks with lead. I really liked doing the stairs because you could put you light source anywhere.

This was my self-portrait project. I used a very basic shape, a cube. this was supposed to represent my head and the thoughts in it. I used a clear plastic so you could "see into" my
thoughts. I did eight different portraits, each one with a different concept. I liked the drawing part of this project but it was by far the most frustrating. I spent so much time drawing i didn't have much time to think about what would hold them. Unfortunately this project fell apart as i was bringing it up to my desk. I took pictures of each side.

I thought this was a very interesting project. At first I didn't know where to go with this project bu then me and tommy and talked and that really helped me. I morphed them together on their joinery. The middle one is a mixture of being held together with both bending and string.

A place for a memory?

This was by far the hardest project. This one was very frustrating to me. This was my first time working with plastic and it was very hard to cut. I started off with using plastic tubes that were curved. My first iteration was a disaster, it wouldn't even stand upright. My second iteration was much better. I used hard plastic tubes and cut them with a saw to descending heights. It reminded me of a clear emerald city, which was not what i was going for. My final one was the most frustrating, I couldn't figure out how to make the plastic stay together. I finally melted the plastic strips to a base. My memory was reaching for a wind chime. The tallest strip is much more steep than all the other heights and very wobbly. I did this on purpose to show how strained and off balance you are when you're really reaching.

This is my zine. I tried to leave a lot of blank space so you would only concentrate on the product and the text. I made the text red because I thought it would make your eye go right to the text. I wanted the text read before you looked at the picture. I did my zine on product design. These were my ten favorites. There were so many awesome products out there it was hard to choose.

2 page layout

This is my 2 page spread. I like my idea of dividing up th page and using a lot of black. I tried to use the black and white areas as the place your eyes could rest. I added small text at the bottom of each picture to explain what was going on. I wrote in white on the black because i wanted it to look natural and crafted, not printed off a computer. Unfortunately some glue bled through th paper so there are small little smudges. Also I feel that the gold overpowers the entire image. I was hoping the huge black slab would balance it out, but I don't think it does.

This was a really fun piece. I really like the dramatic shadows and that most of my face is in the dark. I like how mysterious it looks. o_O

Pencil Box

This is the fold out with the pencils from the side.
This corner was made using scoring. I really like this technique because it makes your corners look very clean and precise.
This was one of my many lids. I'm glad I went back and cleaned up the lid and made the cuts thinned and cleaner.

This is my pencil box. I had numerous ideas come to me at first, but I really liked the fold out/accordian idea best. It displays the pencils very well and each pencil as it's own slot. I chose black and white because I thought that made it look very crisp. The only problem is that white gets dirty very easily. My favorite is the black striped paper. I cut rectangles into the top to give it some depth. The hardest part was making those cuts very clean. I designed the box to look boring on the outside so when you open it and get a fold out it's a complete surprise. I like things that are hidden and require attention to find out its secrets.

Here are two more profiles i did. i feel pretty consistent in my work. I still need to work on getting the likeness of the person in my profiles though.

Here are two profiles i did. They turned out well, but not as good as i hoped. I really wanted to use value when drawing these, and it was hard not to. I think the triangle method works and it helps make the face more proportionate.

Here is my egg project. It's very simple and it's supposed to showcase the egg's shape/geometry. There is a triangular cut-out that i've been told looks like a film reel. The triangle is a very over exaggerated form of the egg. The "bottom" bottom of the egg is bigger than the top. The bars that separate the triangle are there for support, although I like how they look. i made a tube shape to show how oval the egg is when put against a circle.

this is my room mate brushing her teeth. she kept moving a lot so i tried to sketch her fast. i didn't draw her face because it would've been unflattering to say the least.

this one is my favorite, even though it's the simplest one. i like how she is sitting and i thnk i did an ok job of drawing her.......and no face!

i named this one perfect guy because he was pretty still and he was sitting in a perfect position head on. i tried to put a face on him and i'm glad i tried but it didn't turn out how i wanted it.

i did this one at my cubicle. the head turned out lopsided but i think you get a good feel for how the figure was positioned.

here are my four drawings of people. they were done in different places: campus, studio, starbucks, and mt apartment. i didn't draw many faces because i feel like the picasso-ish faces i draw on people when i'm in a hurry to get the figure down take away from my drawings.

so i drove out to a coffee shop last night and when i got there, there was no one to draw. everyone kept getting up and leaving. it was very frustrating. this is the page in my sketchbook of failed attempts and random doodles while waiting to find someone who would sit still.

these are my four drawings of downtown. i'm surprised there isn't sweat all over them because...wow...it's really hot. it was hard not to add any value to the drawings.

Since i was one of the later blog entries i got to see people's second drawings in class and i don't think i did this right, but i like the outcome regardless. I chose a very zoomed in image of my original image and tried to simplify it. I didn't want to do too much detail. I like the huge shapes in this picture.

This picture was drawn in front of the ferguson building. i was drawn to the tower on the building across the street and really just wanted to focus on that. My trees are very un-tree like. They look like huge masses that have nothing to do with nature. I was just trying to get a rough sketch of the trees but i think i went too rough.

This was by far the toughest one to do. I think i start off strong and then loose my focus towards the end. My top part of the chair is ok, but then near the bottom i loose my focus and it falls apart.

This is a t.v. stand in my living room. I didn't draw the t.v. part though. this image came out pretty unrecognizable and i think that's pretty cool!

This is a negative contour of my boyfriend leaning against the wall. I think i captured the lean pretty well with the negative space so i didn't draw the rest of his body. I think the negative spaces say enough.
